Korea’s Jeju Island Smart Grid Test-bed Overview
- The most noticeable plan in Korea’s Smart Grid project is the construction of a Smart Grid
Test-bed in Jeju Island. The Korean government selected Jeju on June 2009 as the location
for Smart Grid Test-bed.
- Jeju Smart Grid will become the world’s largest Smart Grid community that allows the testing of
the most advanced Smart Grid technologies and R&D results, as well as the development of
- A total of 64.5 billion won will be invested between 2009 and 2013. About 10 consortiums in

Introduction to Smart Grid:
Korea Smart Grid Testbed at Jeju Island:
2,000 homes are currently hooked up to a pilot project on the island of Jeju, South Korea, testing a new type of electricity supply system, called a smart grid.
Lim Kee-Chu, whose home is hooked up to the system, has had $20,000 worth of solar power technology installed.
The South Korean plan calls for at least three city grids to go ‘smart’ by 2013, and for 10 per cent of energy to come from renewable sources by 2020.
